Whether we plan to take a stroll on the beach, park or pick up some groceries, our hand instantly reaches for the rubber flip flops or flip flop sandals and shoes. Their vibrant color uplifts our mood and we are ready to tackle all hardships. The sound that this footwear makes actually coined the name flip flop. But if you think this is the best footwear and you will wear it at all times then here is some research that is truly an eye-opener.

 

Auburn University researchers have found that our beloved beach flip flop can alter our gait in subtle ways. This change in our walk can lead to pain in our sole, heel and even cause ankle problems.

It further explains that while we paddle walk in flip flops, it stretches the connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. These muscles stretch and result in pain, swelling, tiredness of the feet and heel spurs. We unknowingly tend to scrunch our toes to balance ourselves. The altered gait, the researchers have speculated could cause long-term ankle and hip problems.

We love our flip flops and really don’t want to part with them so care should be taken when selecting one. These pointers should be kept in mind when selecting kids flip flops as well.

How To Select The Perfect Flip Flop:

1) Choose the flip flop which has a thicker sole.

2) The sole should have a good arch support.

3) It will be most preferable if there is a deep heel cup that will hold the heel securely.

4) A good stable flip flop will help in shock absorption while walking.

Wearing flip flops occasionally is not harmful. It all depends on the way the flip flops are designed. If you prefer open footwear, then sandals with heel straps are a better option. The sandal straps give excellent support to the heel and ankle which allow the foot to perform all types of function without any injury.
